A Picture Story: Schools with Child Created Context

I watched children in 4 of our 26 schools today, and it filled me with… well, a real belief that we are doing the right things…

A middle school library in action.

A middle school student explains the student built cafeteria treehouses to visitors

Third, fourth, and fifth graders in our multiage space play with electricity — the learning was stunning with virtually no apparent instruction.

An electric motor becomes a paintbrush.

It’s getting very hot.

Meanwhile other kids plan out a build of a Greek Column

Realizing the base is a real challenge

While another crew starts at the top

And others animate a biography of Abraham Lincoln

Meanwhile — the kindergarten think tank is in full swing

This is NOT an Eva Moskovitz school

At another middle school and computer is built from scratch

Engineering design comes to life

And kids create all kinds of stuff

Seventh graders write about who they are…

…with words or art…

…and share and support.

Thankfully, at the end of the day I find chocolate dipped Oreos…

We’re not where we need to be yet, but we try every day in the Albemarle County Public Schools to do what’s right for kids. And it is a joy to see.
