America has always loved bullies, with media dominated by miserable cowards who revel in imagined victimhood. (see Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, Vietnam, Cuba). It has always treated immigrants badly - Irish Italian Chinese - and has racism and xenophobia baked in from the start. Treating people humanely has always felt like it required guerrilla action.
