“I did not oppose busing in America,” Biden said. “What I opposed was busing ordered by the Department of Education, that’s what I opposed.” The first part of Biden’s answer is a lie. He clearly opposed all busing, calling it, “a bankrupt concept,” on the Senate floor. The second part is true, he opposed all busing that was ordered by either courts or HEW. That, in effect was all busing — in New Rochelle, in Boston, around every southern city. Even Berkeley only adopted ‘voluntary’ busing due to the threat of court action.

It remains an absolute truth that the segregation we see today in our schools is a direct result of Biden’s senate career, and as he points out, he has not changed his mind, he still supports “states rights” on this issue. And, I strongly presume that he brought this up last week to appeal to those continuing to oppose school integration (mostly via his charter school funders — see NSVF).

Biden was wrong then. Wrong in 1994 as well. He is wrong now.
